Welcome Back Croatia!
I was nervously excited when I heard Croatia was coming back to Eurovision this year. In the past, the best words that can describe Croatia’s performance at Eurovision are “piss poor” — and that’s probably being kind! How can the country that brought us Maja Blagdan, Danijela Martinovic, and Doris Dragovic possibly have exhausted all its musical talent to the point it needs to send utter crap?
Enter Nina Kraljic with “Lighthouse” — deep, soulful, and haunting, the music blends perfectly with Nina’s voice and carries me away. The song is going to be a breath of fresh air in the middle of a sea of lights and electronic sounds. Her song channels its own inner strength, a sea of quiet in a storm of noise.
And this is what Croatia should have been doing all along! Rather than sending crap party songs, toilet-paper serenades, or milktoast a cappella attempts, they should have been drawing on the immense talent that Croatian musicians have to offer. With Nina, they’ve done it right, and they are back with a vengeance!
I am very excited by this song. I am hoping for fog and light and wind, a storm and silence both on the stage. Nina and Croatia will very likely make the final, and I would be very happy if they also make the top 5. Nina can sign up to be my Candle on the Water anytime!
