Cometh the year, cometh Valentina Monetta! In fact, I don’t know how we lived through 2016 without her!
In all honesty, though, this is just an abysmal song, one of the worst of the year. It is cliched, meaningless, and it is really a step backwards for Valentina. Of her four Eurovision entries, this is my least favorite – at least Social Network stood out. Spirit of the Night, on the other hand, is just a hum of noise with “spirit of the night” repeated endlessly. The song is loud, distracting, and utterly annoying. I cannot imagine anyone liking this.
The image created by the song is not one of fun or excitement – rather it comes off as the story of a cougar trying on a drug-fueled quest to find someone to help her make it through the night as she futilely seeks to fill the empty void left by her ex-husband. It is neither pleasant nor flattering. It also seems like Valentina and Jimmie (or at least their lyricist) may not really know what St. Elmo’s Fire is.
Sometimes I think that, with good staging, a song can overcome its weaknesses. But this one is hopeless. It will finish at the bottom of its semi-final, which means we will probably see Valentina in 2018, hopefully with something more presentable.
